William S. Griffing, age 85, of Canton died Monday evening in the Canton Christian Home. Son of the late Samuel and Amy (Anthony) Griffing. He was a life resident of the Canton area and a 1936 graduate of Waynesburg High School. Retired employee of Ryder Truck Lines in 1983 after 18 years of service. William and his wife attended several area churches where he was actively involved in the music ministry and various leadership roles. A WWII Army Air Corps veteran, where he was discharged with the rank of captain. He is also preceded in death by his first wife, Arlene (Welker), one grandson, Christopher Griffing in 1995, one brother, Harry Griffing; one sister, Amy Kincaid and an infant sister, Margaret Griffing. Survived by his wife, Myrtle J. (Wendell) to whom he was married 61 years; two daughters and sons-in-law; Carole and W. James Hall of Canton; Nancy and Matt Pendleton of Canton; two sons and daughters-in-law; G. Lynn and Jewell Griffing of Louisville, William D. and Patricia Griffing of Canton. Seven grandchildren; Jill, David, Stanley, Douglas, Bruce, Michael and Brett, six great grandchildren; Meredith, Erin, Adam, Drew, Lindsay and Casey. One brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Ruth Griffing of North Carolina; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Mae Freeman of Canton, Garnet Coleman of Wayne, OH., Rose and Harry Duncan of Lancaster, OH., Olive Davis of California, Florence and Bob Barr of Cleveland, OH. Services will be Friday August 13, 2004 at 10:00am in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on South Cleveland Ave. with Rev. Dale Boston and Pastor Timothy Sweet officiating. Interment in Sandy Valley Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 2-4 and 7-9pm in the funeral home.
