Vernon Franklin Ickes
Age 79, of Waynesburg died Friday, June 8, 2012 in his care giver's home in Strasburg following a five month battle with cancer. Born January 19, 1933 in Deersville, OH. to the late Vernon H. and Isabel (Cope) Ickes. He was a Waynesburg resident since 1992 and a Korean War veteran. He retired from the Timken Company in 1990 after 39 ½ years of service. Vernon was a member of the American Legion Post #44, VFW Post #3747 where he served with the Funeral Honor Guard, National Rifle Assoc. and volunteered with the American Red Cross for 12 years where he transported dialysis patients. Preceded in death by his wife, Carol Ramey Marks Ickes in 1986; one son, Terry Marks; two sisters, Janet Thompson and Mary Ickes of Oakknoll. He is survived by one daughter, Paula Marks of Columbus; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Karen Marks of Massillon; seven grandchildren, Dennis (Tamara) Herman, Heather (Mike) Props, Jessica Moore, Rob Moore, Kelly Marks-Aul, John Marks Jr. and Connor Marks; six great grandchildren; one brother, Harold E. Ickes; numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to Vernon's care giver, Dennis Jones, Vernon's nephew and spouse, John and Cindy Thompson and Grace Hospice. It was Vernon's wish for cremation and a Celebration of Life Service will take place at a later date.
