Ursula M. Larson
passed away peacefully on Aug. 13 at the Aultman Compassionate Care Center in Canton surrounded by her loving family. She was born Sept. 23, 1919, in Berlin, Germany to the late Walter and Emma (Dumke) Jeske, Ursula was an energetic woman whose vivaciousness could command a room. Whether holding court with her family or imparting her wisdom to students, Ursula embraced life with vigorous enthusiasm. She was preceded in death in October 2014 by her husband and love of her life, Henry A. Larson, whom she met in Berlin at the end of World War II when his 82nd Airborne Division occupied her family's apartment. Ursula and Henry married in 1949 in Germany. Ursula and Henry raised three children in Canton, and she completed her education at Kent State University, earning a master’s degree. Generations of Canton City Schools students knew Ursula as “Frau Larson,” and she delighted in teaching her native German language up until her retirement in 1990. An accomplished soprano, Ursula performed regularly for audiences at the Canton Woman's Club, gave private singing lessons, created a German youth choir and sang for several seasons with the Canton Symphony Chorus. In retirement, she and Henry delighted in traveling to Europe, Canada and the Canary Islands, and she was a member of the Rubber Capital Harmonica Club in Akron. A woman of strong faith, she was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church in Canton and sang in the church's choir for 50 years. Ursula’s survivors include her sister, Wera Fricke of Germany, and her three children: Frederick (Kay) Larson, Theodore (Beth) Larson and Patricia (David) Staton, all of Canton. Ursula also leaves behind six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Tuesday August 18, 2015 at 11:00am in the Christ Presbyterian Church, 530 Tuscarawas St. W., Canton, Ohio 44702. Interment in West Lawn Cemetery. Friends will be received one hour before services at the church on Tuesday (10-11am). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Ursula’s memory to Aultman Compassionate Care Center, 2821 Woodlawn Ave. N.W., Canton, Ohio, 44708.
