Stephen Svik
Age 96, passed away peacefully in his home Sunday June 12, 2016. He was born February 19, 1920 in Bruceton, PA to the late Peter and Anna (Prisch) Svik. From the ages of 16 to 20 he worked with his father, as a barber at Library Barber Shop in Pennsylvania. After the death of his father in 1940, Stephen enrolled in Mason Frederick Cosmetology School. He passed the State Board and became a Licensed Cosmetologist, working at Joseph Horn’s in Pittsburg. He furthered his education for advanced training at Antoine` Design School in New York. In 1944 he moved to Canton and was employed at Halle Brother’s Salon, from there he worked at Earl’s Beauty Salon. Stephen opened his own business, Stephen’s Hair Styling Salon in 1957. He retired in 1996. Stephen was a good and honorable man and he will be greatly missed as a father, grandfather and great-grandfather. We thank God for his long life and his loving presence will be forever in our hearts. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Canton where he served as an usher for many years. He was the last living charter member of Holy Martyr’s Council #4733 Knights of Columbus, past Grand Knight, Knight of the year, Church activity director and received the Blue Max award for church activity. Stephen is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Stella who passed away on July 7, 2014; one brother, John Svik; one sister, Marion Krause; son-in-law, Steve Gilbert and a grandson, Luke Andrew Trissel. He is survived by his loving children, Veronica Svik, Stephen (Sue Ellen) Svik, Mary (Roger) Sidoti, Christine Palombo and Rita (Matt) Trissel; 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; one sister, Annabelle Heft; one brother, James Svik; sister-in-law, Violet Svik and several nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours in keeping with Stephen’s wishes. All who wish to celebrate the life of Stephen are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial Thursday June 16, 2016 at 10:00am in St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Robert Kaylor as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Holy Martyr’s Council #4733 Knights of Columbus at 1602 Market Ave S., Canton, OH 44707 or Crossroads Hospice at 3743 Boettler Oak Drive, Suite E., Green, OH 44685.
