Samuel D. Shaheen, Sr.
Samuel D. Shaheen Sr., age 91, went home to be with his Lord, Saturday morning following a brief illness. Born in Rochester, PA., July 4, 1913 to the late Joseph and Julia (Zarick) Shaheen. At an early age, Sam fell in love with the theater and spent several years in New York acting in off Broadway plays with such well known actors as James Earl Jones and Darren McGavin. When he returned home he was the co-proprietor of Bolivar Road Variety Store, South Theater and Southland Roller Rink with his brothers, Bill and George. A committed Christian, he took his love of acting and became known throughout NE Ohio as a portrayer of Biblical characters. Through his portrayals in countless churches, he won many lost souls to Jesus Christ. His service also incude a lay leader, lay speaker and a Sunday School teacher in the United Methodist Church. Past President of Canton Camp of Gideons and also served as a member of the FISH organization, Canton. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth (McCreary) in 2001 and three sisters, Mary, Annie and Rose. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Samuel and Karen Shaheen Jr., Joseph and Lorraine Shaheen all of Canton; two step-daughters, Cora and her husband, Carroll Kerr of Findlay, OH, Pauline Shiltz of Sunset Beach, NC; one grandson, Mike Shaheen; three step-grandchildren, Carolyn Varick, John and Matthew Kerr; five step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bill Shaheen of Canton, George Shaheen of Michigan; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00am in Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with Dr. Earl Bailey officiating. Interment in Greentown Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday 5-8pm in Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland Ave. and one hour before services at the church (10-11am). In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Mt. Zion U.M.C. at 2637 Baum St. SE, Canton, OH 44707.
