Richard C. “Chief” Stauffer

Age 80 of East Canton passed away Thursday August 12, 2021. Richard was born June 6, 1941, to the late Melvin and Mary (Ronald) Stauffer of East Canton. He attended East Canton High School and joined the US Army where he served overseas throughout Europe. Richard served the citizens of Osnaburg Township as Transportation and Grounds Superintendent for Osnaburg Local Schools for over 30 years. He additionally served on the East Canton/Osnaburg Township Fire Department for 38 years. He served as the Chief of the department for 28 years. Richard was a 3rd generation firefighter in the Stauffer family. Richard was instrumental in the establishment of the Stark County 911 emergency phone system, the consolidation of the East Canton Fire Department to the Osnaburg Township Fire Department. Richard was honored to have the current Osnaburg Fire Station named after him in 1999. Following retirement from the fire department he served as an Osnaburg Township Trustee. Richard was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite Valley of Canton, Jr.O.U.A.M., Stark County Firefighters Association, Stark County Fire Chiefs Association and Ohio Fire Chiefs Association.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Marilyn Stauffer to whom he was married for 53 years. Richard is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Lou Rossi; son and daughter-in-law, Richard D. “Rick” and Laura Stauffer; three grandchildren, Sofia Rossi, Alexa Daulbaugh and Jenna Daulbaugh; his sister, Nancy Rinehart and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday August 16, 2021, at 10:00am in the Sanders Funeral Home in East Canton. Burial will follow in Mapleton Cemetery with military honors. Friends and family will be received Sunday 4-7pm in the funeral home with a Last Alarm service at 6:45pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
