Richard D. Smith
Richard D. Smith, age 80, of Canton died Friday, April 18, 2008 in his home unexpectedly in his sleep. Born January 23, 1928 in Royal Oak, MI. to the late Charles W. and Anna C. (Bernert) Smith. He was a Canton area resident since 1936 and was a United States Coast Guard veteran and a WWII United States Marine Corps veteran. Richard retired from the Canton Police Department in 1977, the United States Marine Corps and Perry Local Schools where he taught electronics. Member of Church of the Savior United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #44, Marine Corps Association, Army and Navy Union, Fraternal Order of Police, Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, Tam O'Shanter Golf Club and served many years as an usher at athletic events for McKinley and Perry Schools. Survived by his wife, Marian R. (Zimmerman) Smith; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Robert Berens of Massillon, Judy and Rex Hicks of Pickerington, OH; one step-daughter and spouse, Judith and Louis Meier of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Smith, Robert (Ruth) Smith and Tom Miller; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 1:00 pm in the Myers-Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home in East Canton with Rev. Edward Fashbaugh officiating. Interment with military honors in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens. Friends may call Monday from 6-8 pm.
