Pastor James D. Zimmerman
Age 63, of Canton, passed away Tuesday July 29, 2014. He was born November 12, 1950 in Amherst, OH to Raymond and L. Jean (Holden) Zimmerman. Jim was raised on a dairy farm in Birmingham, OH and was a 1969 graduate of Firelands High School. He was a 1973 graduate of Malone College and received his Masters in Theology from Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL in 1976. He received a Masters in Divinity from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, Lombard, IL in 1978. Jim was currently the pastor of Otterbein United Methodist Church since 2010. His previous pastorates include, Trinity UMC, Massillon, OH, Chatham Community (Federated) Church, Chatham, OH, Burbank Trinity and Faith UMCs, Burbank, OH, New London Friends Church, New London, IN and Spiceland Friends Church, Spiceland, IN. Jim was active in the Fairless Clergy Association, Compass Group Leader for Eastern Ohio Conference and served on various conference and district committees. He led three tours to the Holy Land and was an avid Star Trek fan, Dr. Who fan, comic book reader and collector. He is preceded in death by his father, Raymond Zimmerman. Jim is survived by his wife, Janet E. (McLaughlin) to whom he was married 37 years; one daughter, Debbie Zimmerman of Columbus; his mother, L. Jean Zimmerman; sister, Carolyn (Milton) Sayler; brother, Ronald (Sue) Zimmerman; brother-in-law, Robert (Diane) McLaughlin; numerous nieces and nephews; two great-nephews and one great-niece. A Celebration of Life service will be Saturday August 2, 2014 at 11:00am in the Church of the Lakes at 5944 Fulton Ave NW, Canton, OH 44718 with Pastor Bryan George officiating. Calling hours will be Thursday (tonight) 4-8pm in Otterbein United Methodist at 6025 Shepler Church Rd SW, Navarre, OH 44662 and one hour before services on Saturday (10-11am).
