Nelson Graber
loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away on April 11, 2012. Born in Canton on April 18, 1917 to the late John and Cora (Scherer) Graber, he was a 1935 graduate of Canton South High School. On August 22, 1953, he married Pearl Van Voorhis and she survives him. Nelson was co-owner of the Charles Lehr Company for 20 years. He later retired from the Hoover Company. Nelson was a veteran of WWII--having served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 as a Petty Officer Second Class. Nelson's ship, the USS Fillmore, took him to service in the Pacific Theatre, Guadalcanal, Guam, Japan, New Guinea, Philippines, Pearl Harbor, and Saipan. As a result of his service, Nelson earned the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Navy Occupational Service Medal, and Philippine Liberation Medal. The avid gardener was also a three-time award winner of the Canton Board of Realtors "Yard Beautiful Contest" and received several honors for his window and door displays over the holidays.
In addition to sharing his love of gardening with his family and friends, Nelson was a former elder of the Indian Run Christian Church and former master of the Sponseller Grange.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Janet Thiede and Dean Graber and his companion, Karen Beitzel; four grandchildren, Joshua, Melissa, Taylor, and Hunter Thiede; and one sister, LaDean (Jack) Lofgren.
Nelson was preceded in death by his sisters, Viola Newell and Arlene Minnick and his brothers, Clarence, Dale, and Lester Graber.
Funeral services will be Saturday April 14, 2012 at 11:00am in the Indian Run Christian Church with Terry Bailey officiating. Interment in Sandy Valley Cemetery, Waynesburg. Friends may call Friday 6-8 pm in the Sanders Funeral Home in East Canton and one hour before services on Saturday at the church (10-11am).
