Mildred E. Wharton
Age 102, of Canton passed away Tuesday March 4, 2014 in her home at the Sterling House. She was born June 25, 1911 in Canton Township to the late John and Iva (Haverstock) Gerber. Mildred was a life resident of the Canton area and a 1929 graduate of North Industry High School. She was co-owner/secretary and treasurer with her husband, Wayne, of Wharton Electric for 53 years. Following her retirement she served as a volunteer at the McKinley Museum, Amos McDannel Elementary School, Fairless Food Cupboard and the former Senior Boutique. Mildred was a charter member of Otterbein United Methodist Church where she served as organist and pianist for 48 years, was a member of the United Methodist Women and had served on the church council for many years. Mildred loved her independence, crocheting, playing the piano and writing her uplifting messages through her card ministry. She is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne H. Wharton in 1977; four brothers, Dwight, Lester, Joe and Wilbur Gerber; four sisters, Marie Grosenbaugh, Gladys Stallman, Goldie Boughman, Elsie Faye Steenrod and two infant sisters. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Thomas Maddox of Canton, Linda and Hugo Icardi Jr. of Canton South; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Lou Ann Wharton of Magnolia; 10 grandchildren, Tom (Donna) Maddox, Jill Hanna, Tim Maddox, Joy Maddox, Jim (Julie) Wharton, Lori Spaulding, Lisa Bowen, Mark (Susan Amidon) Icardi, Lanette (Jay) Studebaker, Darin (Kim) Icardi; 10 great-grandchildren, Justin (Jill) Maddox, Carrie Maddox, Andrew Hanna, Jessica and Jordan Wharton, Giselle and Trent Spaulding, Kalen Bowen, Lindsey and Perry Studebaker; one sister, Thelma Shulty of Navarre. The family would like to thank the Sterling House, Dr. Janine Janowicz and Clear Path Hospice for their wonderful care and comfort while helping Mildred maintain her independence. Funeral services will be Friday March 7, 2014 at 11:00am in Otterbein United Methodist Church at 6025 Shepler Church Rd SW, Navarre, OH 44662 with Pastor James Zimmerman officiating. Interment in Eden Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday 5-8pm at the church and one hour before services on Friday at the church (10-11am). In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Red Bird Mission School at 15420 South Highway 66, Beverly, KY 40913-9607 or Clear Path Hospice at 2492 Wedgewood Dr., Suite A., Akron, OH 44312.
