Melvin L. Rhiel
Age 94, of Minerva and formerly of East Canton died peacefully in his home Tuesday, August 11, 2009. Born November 11, 1914 in Canton, OH. to the late Edwin J. and Emma E. (Schneider) Rhiel. Mel was a WWII U.S. Army veteran having participated in the Battle of the Bulge Theatre in France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Mel retired from Republic Storage Systems in 1977 after 43 years of service. He was a member of Paris Israel Lutheran Church, V.F.W. and Mayfield Senior Center where he and his wife, Emma, operated "Mel's Diner" for many years. Mel was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and rarely missed a game with colorful commentary afterwards. Preceded in death by his wife, Emma in 2003; son, David Gooden Rhiel in 1959; daughter, Jolaine D. Beltz in 2008; two brothers, Cecil and Dwight Rhiel; sister, Gladys Krall. Survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Melvin II and Judy Rhiel of Malvern, Alfred and Shirley Rhiel of Minerva; son-in-law, Jeff Beltz of East Canton; nephew, Gary Rhiel of Elmore, OH; niece, Cathy Wertheim of Arizona; seven grandchildren, Mel III (Sheila), Robert (Shelley), James (Diana), Heather Rhiel, Alfred II, Michele Branco (Tu'i) and Joshua (Angeline); great grandson and buddy, Zeke Allen Rhiel (Kristina) of Minerva who helped with grandpa duty; 17 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; there are many other children who loved and called him grandpa that gave him great joy in his life. Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 14, 2009 at 10:00 am in Paris Israel Lutheran Church, 376 Paris Ave. S.E., Paris, OH. 44669, with Rev. Susan Rodgers officiating. Interment in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Friends may call Thursday (Tonight) from 6 – 8 pm in the Myers-Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home in East Canton.
