Lewis B. Kappler, Lt. Col.
Age 79, of Louisville died Sunday, January 30, 2011 in his home following an extended illness. Born August 24, 1931 in Bakersville, OH. to the late, Christian and Estella (Masters) Kappler. He was a Louisville resident since 1976. Lewis retired from the U.S. Army as Lieutenant Colonel 05 after 36 years of service. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Silver Star, Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts while serving in Korea. He was also awarded with a Good Conduct Ribbon, occupational metal with Japan and Germany, United Nation Service Ribbon, Korean Campaign Ribbon with eight stars, Emeritus Service Award, U.S. Presidential Citation and Korean Citation. Lewis also retired from U.S. Ceramic Tile as a traffic manager and was the owner/operator of Kappler's Hilltop Orchard. He was a member of VMCCA Antique Car Club, Atwood Yacht Club, American Legion Post# 548 and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Preceded in death by his first wife, Naomi Kappler; two sisters, Virginia Deal and Stella Gardner. Survived by his wife, Kathryn Kappler; one daughter, Lucinda Welch of Kent; one grandson, Chancellor Welch of Kent; one step-son, Charles (Adrienne) Stewart of Canton; two step-daughters, Janice (Sam) Ball of Carrolton, Shari Stewart of Barberton; two step-grandchildren, Katlin and Shane Unkefer; three brothers, James Kappler of Topeka, KS, Richard (LaRue) Kappler of Denver, CO, Leroy (Sharon) Kappler of Uniontown; one sister, Linda (Richard) Moyer of Carrollton; several nieces and nephews. Lew was a hardworking man of few words. He always greeted those he met with a friendly smile, firm handshake and a heartfelt hello. To those that he touched he will be remembered for his love of sailing, antique cars and a generosity to help others no matter what the need. He will be sadly missed but always in our hearts by his wife, family and friends. Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011 at 10:00 am in the Sanders Funeral Home in East Canton with Pastor Erik Marshall officiating. Interment in East Lawn Cemetery, Minerva. Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 pm.
