John G. Tonkovich Sr.
John G. Tonkovich Sr., age 90, of Canton, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 in Altercare of Canton following an extended illness. He was born June 29, 1915 in Cleveland, OH, to the late George and Barbara (Kovijan) Tonkovich, and was a Canton area resident since 1950. John was a WWII Army veteran where he was engaged in the Battle of the Bulge, was a POW, the recipient of four bronze stars and a purple heart. He retired from Canton Local Schools in 1986 after 26 years of service. He is preceded in death by his wife, Martha P. Tonkovich in 1998; one son, David Tonkovich. Survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John and Linda Tonkovich Jr. of Massillon; three grandchildren and their spouses, Pamela and Shawn Yochum of Canton, Dena and Earl Stripe of Columbus, Julie and John Aylward of Cleveland; two great grandchildren, Rachel Stripe and Alec Stripe. Funeral services will be Monday March 6, 2006 at 11:00am in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland with Rev.Joel Adkins officiating. Interment in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens with Military Honors. Friends may call Sunday 2-4pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Amos McDaniel Elementary School Library Fund at 210 38th St SE, Canton, OH 44707.
