Mortenson, John Frank
age 82, of East Sparta, OH, passed away Sunday April 12, 2009 in his home following a two year illness. He was born August 11, 1926 to the late John and Matilda (Frank) Mortenson in Canton. His family moved to East Sparta in 1938 and upon graduation from Canton Township High School in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theatre of Operations with the 387th Ordinance. After returning to the United States, Frank became a bricklayer working for local contractors and was an instructor of apprentices for the local union. In 1958, he became field superintendent for Rudick Construction Co. in Canton, and later was named vice-president, retiring in 1989. He was a member of William McKinley Lodge #431 F&AM and Scottish Rite Valley of Canton. During his life, Frank deeply enjoyed his many hobbies of gardening, restoring an antique car and truck, and the work of love on his 30 acre farm. He considered his greatest legacy his seven grandchildren for whom he was a devoted mentor. Frank was known and will be long remembered for his love of family, farm, community and country. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Eugene Mortenson. He is survived by his wife, Glenda (Burfield) to whom he was married 56 years on March 7, 2009; two daughters, Deborah Mortenson Eckinger of Bolivar, Dr. Rebecca Mortenson-Meese (Thomas Meese) of Denver, CO; one son, John Frank Mortenson Jr of East Sparta; seven grandchildren, Philip, Jeremy, Gregory, Julie and Jeffrey Eckinger, Kaitlin and Cody Meese; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday April 18, 2009 at 12:00pm in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home with Chaplain Paul Rudy officiating. Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Friday 6-8pm with Masonic services at 5:45pm.
