James Abbott

James "Jim" Abbott
age 94, died peacefully surrounded by his family on October 3, 2009. Jim was born on February 3, 1915 in Castel Frentano, Italy and came to this country at the age of 14. He was preceded in death by his parents, Domenico and Giuditta Abbonizio, his wife Audrey (Waldron) on May 30, 2002, and brother and sister-in-law, Cam and Mary Abbott. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Pat Abbonizio and his nieces and nephews to whom he was a second father; Mary Jean and Bob Bowe, Jim and Nancy Abbott, Judy and Dan Gill, Donna Abbott, Nancy and Rich Long, Susan Abbonizio, Sandra Abbonizio, Laura and Darren Miller and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. He also leaves his good buddies from the YMCA athletic club. Jim was a graduate from McKinley High School and retired from Republic Steel Corporation after 46 years of service. He served proudly in the Army Air Corps 379th Bombardment Group in WWII and loved telling stories of his travels and experiences. In 1996 Jim was inducted into the Greater Canton Old Timers Fast Pitch Softball Association Hall of Fame for his 25 years as a pitcher and leading his teams to championships. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Canton where he served as an usher. Jim's family would like to thank the staff of the Special Care Unit at The Inn at Belden Village for taking him into there hearts and giving him wonderful care during his last year. Memorial contributions may be made in Jims' name to the YMCA of Central Stark County, 1201 - 30th Street N.W., Suite 200, Canton, OH 44709 or St. Mary's Church of Canton, 1602 Market Avenue S., Canton, OH 44707. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday October 7, 2009 at 10:00 am in St. Mary's Church with Fr. Benson Okpara as celebrant. Internment with Military Honors in Forest Hill Cemetery.
