Groff C. Starkey
Groff C. Starkey, age 90, of Canton, passed away Monday June 2, 2008 in Aultman Hospital following an extended illness. He was born April 19, 1918 in Smithfield, WV, to the late Lafayette and Mary Alice (Snodgrass) Starkey. Groff was a WWII Army veteran and a Canton area resident since 1946. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1982 after 34 years of service and was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers for 50 years. He was a member of 38th St Church of Christ where he had served as an Elder for 35 years and previously served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Song Leader and on the Building Committee. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Vivian C. (Baker) to whom he was married 67 years; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gwen and Harry Rose of Canton, Penny and Commander George Wallace, retired U.S. Navy, of Los Angeles, CA; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Ted and Terri Starkey of Wintersville, OH, Mark Starkey of Canton, Grady and Debbie Starkey of Proctorville, OH; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; one brother, Ray Starkey of Center Point, WV; one sister, Bonnie Mae Collins of Fairmont, WV. Funeral services will be Friday June 6, 2008 at 1:00pm in the 38th St. Church of Christ with Lance Lindenberger officiating. Interment in Sunset Hills Burial Park. Friends may call Thursday 6-8pm in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland Ave. and one hour before services at the church (12-1pm).
