Gladie M. Merritt passed away August 16th at the age of 90 surrounded by her loving family.
She was born to the late Howard and Evelyn Kevan. She is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Susan Rodgers, her son-in-law, Thomas Milbourne, her grandsons, Marc Smith and Brent Milbourne, as well as her brothers, Denny and Richard Kevan.
She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 70 years, Ed Merritt, her daughter, Deborah Milbourne, sons, Scott, Mark and (Margaret), Chris and (Sue), twelve dearly loved and adored grandchildren and 13 cherished and loved great-grandchildren. She was a beloved Wife, Homemaker, Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma and friend.
Gladie's greatest gift was that of a giver. She cared deeply for her family and was always available to help and show her love by meeting needs. She loved deeply and unconditionally. She made each member of the family feel as if they were her prized possession. And they were. She truly loved people. She loved to garden and always had the most beautiful summer flowers.
Gladie ALWAYS had a positive mindset and outlook on life. She was a fervent encourager and a true warrior as she lived each day. Her intelligence, wisdom, and sense of humor, made her the most enjoyable person to be around. She was devoted to the Lord and a faithful follower of Jesus Christ.
For many years, Gladie served along side her husband, Ed as they drove the bus for Canton Baptist Temple where she was a member. After making sure all 5 kids were ready, they would set out to pick up many children and adults, bringing them to church. All this was done with the hope lives would be changed by accepting Christ. She loved collecting recipes as well as cooking and baking. She was a great culinary teacher to her children and grandchildren. She faithfully served on the Caring and Sharing team at church where she did was she loved....cook and serve.
In reading her journal, the question was asked, "What is Your View On Life?" Her reply was this, "Here today - gone tomorrow. Be ready for the tomorrow as it never ends when you are born again in Christ. You will pass on to an everlasting life with the Lord Jesus in the most glorious life thereafter. You will live in eternity forevermore. What is my view on life you ask? Eternity forever with Jesus. I love life - its ups and downs."
Our precious mom was a mentor, role model, and Godly example of how we need to live our lives. May her legacy live in her family left behind as we strive to emulate the woman we dearly loved and cherished until we are once again reunited in Christ Who is our Source of Hope and Glory.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Canton Baptist Temple, September 14. Calling hour will be from 10-11 and the service at 11 with long-time friend, Pastor Delaney Young officiating. In lieu of flowers, please look to the Refuge of Hope in Canton to make a donation in honor of Gladie.
