Gauze, Dwight N.
age 90, of Canton, passed away Thursday April 30, 2009 in Hennis Care Center following an extended illness. He was born April 26, 1919 in Howenstine, OH, to the late Ira Brighton and Bessie P. (Montaque) Gauze. Dwight was a 1937 graduate of Canton Township High School and a WWII Navy veteran. He was formerly employed by The Timken Company, operated C.C. Davis Shell Station for 33 years, served as a Bus Driver for Canton Local Schools and Canton City Schools Crossing Guard. He was a member of Howenstine Christian Church. Dwight was a charter member of Canton Township Station #5 Fire Department where he had served as Chief. Charter and life member of North Industry Sportsmen's Club where he was awarded "Man of the Year" in 1981, life member of the Fraternal Order of Moose #223, VFW Post #5047, Navarre and member of the Independent Order of Foresters #1093. Member of the Greater Canton Old-Timers Fast Pitch Softball Association where in 2004 he was awarded outstanding player for the years 1939-1954. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one son, Merlin Gauze; one brother, Glen Gauze; one sister, Berdine Corbit. He was survived by his wife of 68 years, Mildred L. (Davis) Gauze, who then also passed away hours later the same day. Additional survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Steve Knox of Canton; one granddaughter, Linda Knox of Canton; one grandson and spouse, Steve and Beth Knox of East Sparta; two great-grandsons, Sam and Jaret Knox of East Sparta; one brother, Harold Gauze of Canton; niece and spouse, Sandy and Dale Clapper of East Sparta. Following cremation a graveside service will be Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 11:00 am in Melscheimer Cemetery with Rev. Paul Gerycz officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Canton Area Chapter, 4815 Munson St. N.W., Canton, OH. 44718 or the Howenstine Christian Church, 6721 Derek Cir.
