Donald G. Potter
Donald G. Potter of Canton died October 28, 2007 on his 89th birthday in Roselane Nursing Home following a brief illness. Born in Canton, OH. on Oct. 28, 1918 to the late John H. and Mary (Krajick) Potter. He was a life resident of Canton and was of Catholic faith. He was a 1938 graduate of McKinley High School. Donald was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in both WWII and the Korean Wars. Donald served in the Battle of Guadalcanal where his ship the USS Preston (DD379) was damaged and sank on Nov. 15, 1942 and half of the crew perished. He was able to survive the ship's sinking having been in the water over fifteen hours until being rescued. He then was stationed for eighteen months on the USS Poe (IX103) in New Caledonia, followed by going to the Brooklyn Navy Yard and commissioned the USS John Pierce (DD753) where he served until being discharged. Donald then re-enlisted during the Korean War and served aboard the USS Walke (DD723) where he served until being discharge once again. He also served in the CCC Camp. He retired from Taylor Beverage in 1979 with over 30 years of service. Life member of VFW #693, also member of American Legion Isaac L. Kinney Post #244, Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans Navy Memorial, Orrville Railroad Society, and the North Industry Sportsmans Club. Preceded in death by his wife Dorothy J. Potter in 2004; a brother, Kalman Potter; and a sister, Olga Nizner. Survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Karen Kirsch of Middleburg, FL, Terry and Brenda Potter of East Sparta, Rev. Donald Potter of Mechanicsburg, PA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and David Dedmon of Navarre, Donna and Jeff Umstead of Canton; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; twin great-great grandchildren; a special friend Paul. Funeral services will be Thursday, November 1, 2007 at 10:00 am in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on South Cleveland Ave. with Aultman Hospice Chaplain Paul Rudy officiating. Interment with military honors in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 5 - 8 pm.
