Betty Eileen Eckinger

May 10, 1925 — December 13, 2014

Betty Eileen Eckinger
age 89, formerly of Canton and Zoar, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Hennis Care Centre in Bolivar surrounded by her family. She was born on May 10, 1925 to the late Phil and Lizzie (Amos) Reisling. She grew up in the Canton area and graduated from Canton Township High School in 1943. After graduation she worked for the Ohio Power Co. and also worked many years for the Stark County Election Board during the elections. On September 21, 1947, Betty married Walter H. Eckinger, who preceded her in death on December 6, 1997. They lived in the Canton area raising their family and later moved to Zoar. She later resided for 12 years with her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Rocky Bourquin and family. Working alongside her husband Walt as the bookkeeper for the family business, she retired as Vice-President/Secretary of Eckinger Construction Co. in 1991 but continued working with the company until 2005. Betty remained active for as long as she could whether it was on the golf course with her family and friends including the 'Honey Bunch' golf group, filling in crossword puzzles, or watching sporting events. But what she loved most was her family, especially her 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was present for each of her grandchildren's graduations from high school, many of their college graduations, and attended as many of their extra-curricular activities as she possibly could. She was an active member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in East Canton and later became a member of St John United Church of Christ in Bolivar. Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Philip Reisling, and one infant grandson. Betty will be sadly missed by her three sons, Rick (Paulette) Eckinger of Magnolia, Jim (Cheryl) Eckinger of Bolivar, Tom (Nancy) Eckinger of Louisville, and two daughters, Janice (Randy) Holdsworth of Zoar, and Gail (Rocky) Bourquin of Waynesburg; 17 grandchildren; Lisa (Joseph) Wigfield, Scott (Jessica) Eckinger, Michael, Jason (Joyce), and Jared Eckinger, Phil, Jeremy, Greg, Jeff Eckinger and Julie (Kevin) Hollingsworth, Kristen (Michael) Smith, Adam and Lauren Holdsworth, Andy (Kara), Ronnie (Jamie), Cory (Katie) Bourquin and Lizzie (Tom) DeLong and 18 great-grandchildren who will all miss their Grandma Betty very much. A Special Thank You to Marilyn McCoy and to Bolivar Hennis Care Centre for their loving and compassionate care. Funeral services will be Wednesday December 17, 2014 at 11:00am in the Kreighbaum-Sanders Funeral Home on S. Cleveland Ave. Burial will be in Ft. Laurens Cemetery, Bolivar.
