Barbara A. Stokes
Age 82, of Canton South, went to her heavenly home to be with her Lord, family, and friends on Tuesday October 16, 2018. She was born January 23, 1936 in Alliance, OH to the late Wayne and Lena (Scott) Garrison. Barbara was a 1953 graduate of Alliance High School as Valedictorian and member of the National Honor Society. She was a 1957 graduate of Mount Union College Magna Cum Laude and member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Psi Kappa Omega. In 1957 she taught English as a foreign language at the Instituto Colombo Americano in Cali Colombia, South America for two years. She then was a Spanish teacher at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH for one year on a teaching fellowship; She was awarded Teacher of the Year at Sandy Valley High School in 1963 and proud recipient of the Martha Holden Jennings Education Award in 1975. Barbara began teaching at Lake High School in 1959, Sandy Valley in 1960 and Canton South High School in 1964, retiring from Faircrest Memorial Middle School in 1993. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry L. Stokes on October 3, 2018 to whom she was married 59 years; her brother, Peter Garrison; several aunts and uncles; four brothers-in-law, Tom, Harvey, Ron Stokes and Brandon Blum; sister-in-law, Nan Stokes. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry Allen and Julie Stokes of Columbus, OH; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Chris Boerner of Massillon; two step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren; sister, Norma Blum of Lilburn, GA; sisters-in-law, Elsie Stokes of North Canton, Jane Stokes of Canton and Margaret Garrison of Alliance; several nieces and nephews. Barbara was a member of North Industry Christian Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and was a longtime member of the choir. She loved camping, crocheting, playing cards and board games. Funeral services will be Saturday October 20, 2018 at 11:00am in the North Industry Christian Church with Steve Kimbrel officiating. Entombment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call two hours before services at the church on Saturday (9-11am). In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at 408 Ninth St SW, Canton, OH 44707.
